A colleague, knowing I have a boat, asked me about where to buy a satellite receiver for a boat. He's offered to find out for a client who has a large boat (I don't know what) thinking I would know. My little boat is hardly in satellite TV territory, the receiver would probably cause a capsize.
So big boat people - can you buy a stabilised dish and does it work in harbour only or can you get one that works at sea?

Buy mini dish (approx 10" accross with suction mounting) from Road Pro approx £140 with the tuning meter. Then search the free ad's for a second hand reciever / decoder. This usualy comes with the domestic dish which you throw away. Apply for a freeserve reception card or use your satalite card from home but you have to phone sky to register the new card to your second decoder. Alternatively buy the dish and take your receiver from home. Works all over Europe.

There are 4 installations using the kit on our pontoon and all of them work perfectly through storm gale and fishing boat wash.
Check your satellite orientation and the position of the antena on the dish we found that there were 2 satellites giving signals but only one gave a signal of good enough quality to give a picture. You can check the signal strength and quality in the set up pages of the sky decoder. The system dosen't like looking through buildings, rigging, covers, radar arch or hand rails. Although having said that last winter ours worked prerfectly sitting on the upturned dog's bowl looking through the back canopy window. The only freezing of the picture we got was when the dog sat infront of the dish.

i HAVE NO PROBLEM, maybe you needed a sat meter to set the aerial correctly.

I have been using the old analogue decoders.

Can I just buy a digital decoder and use the same dish?

Do I need a different LNB?

For digital you will need a different LNB. Dish should be ok, but the LNB clamp you are using may also need to be replaced or modified to take the new LNB. Pick yourself up a secondhand Sky decoder and register a secondhand contract with them from your current address. Fill in the contract and the programme package you require and they will send you a card by return. Do NOT buy a decoder, paying extra for the card. The card is of no use to you. Reception may be curtailed if the dish is too small.
