Satellite Phones

I'm looking to buy a satellite phone for use on a crossing from the Med to Bahamas later this year.
I dont want to rent a phone incase I just keep on going and dont come back.

The Irridium system looks to be good for what I need but any feedback from anyone that has this system and where the best place to buy a handset might be would be much appreciated.

Much cheaper to buy them in the US, you can also have your account run from there in US$, check out some US sites and give them a call, some sell refurbished ones. I did all the researh until I was told my T-mobile phone would work OK in the river medway, so didn't bother.

1. find out what it will cost friends and family to call you. that was enough to put me off.

2. if you want email, make sure your computer is set up & tested before leaving home. trying to upgrade software versions in mid ocean is no joke!
