Hey everybody
Trying to fill out my ofcom application for a ship radio licence on-line. Its going pretty good so far except I dont know what a Satellite Earth Station is, the previous owner has the yacht down as having one on the old licence.
Anybody know what it is? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for the info, but I am still unclear what kit I would have onboard that would come under this title.
Does that cover GPS kit? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Probably something like Inmarsat C or M (just taking a guess though)

You could be right there, i've just pulled out an old paper application form and looked up the same section on it.
Under Satellite Earth Station equipment they want to know inmarsat mobile numbers.
Guess the previous owner must have had one.
cheers
Dougie

inmarsat mobile numbers apply to Satphones.

Nobody has a Satellite Earth Station on board. They are big antennae in the past up to 100ft in diameter, but now a lot smaller. They are usually operated by telecomms companies such as BT or C&W, although it is possible for a business or government department to have a privately operated one too, hence the requirement for a license.

Goonhilly Downs is the most well known site in the southern UK.

On the back of thr previous owners radio licence is a list of all the kit onboard.

1 x VHF Fixed radio (156-163MHz) (ITU band-V)
1 x Radar (2900 to 3100MHz, 9300 to 9500MHz)
1 x VHF Portable radio (156-163MHz) (ITU band-V)
1 x EPIRB (121.5/243 MHz) (ITU band-BC)
1 x Satellite Earth Station - Standard A (ITU band - V)
1 x Radiotelephony (MF/RT) (1605 to 4000kHz) (ITU band-T)
1 x Radiotelephony (HF/RT) (4000 to 27500kHz) (ITU band-U)

I can identify everything above accept item 5 on the list.
Maybe I should just delete it from the list as I fill out the on-line form.

As I said before, a Standard A can be up to 100ft diameter, used by public telecomms operators. I still believe its an error on your licence.

However, I wasnt great at radio stuff when I was a (submarine cable) engineer in the 70's and early 80's, let alone now, so Amphritite may correct me again /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have a dig around your boat for a light-ish blue box that says Thrane & Thrane on it. If you find one, it is an Inmarsat C.

I will do a web search to try find a picture for you.

... back in 10 minutes.

The style of the antenna and box have changed over the years, but not that much.

When we bought our first boat in July, the previous owners licence covered lots of items.

VHF Fixed, VHF onboard portable, UHF onboard portable, MF/HF Fixed, Ship Earth Station, SART, DSC, Marine Radar, EPIRB 121.5Mhz, 406Mhz, 1.6Ghz.

As we only have a VHF set I only applied for my licence to have VHF DSC Fixed, VHF Fixed and VHF portable. I will add to these when if/when we purchase the items or change boats and it comes with additional included.

[/ QUOTE ] Just make the application for the equipment you know you have. ( I don't know what item 5 is either) If you want to add (or delete) equipment you can "easily" do it at a later date.

A tip (at least it foxed me for a while) when you have completed the last page (P9) you have to click on "Save licence details" to proceed.

Also if you are running IE7 make sure you have read the note elsewhere on the Ofcom site about overcoming the fact that Microsoft has seen fit to set the security defaults to disable file down loads in IE7. If you don't follow the instructions you will not be able to down load and print the licence. BTW it is 13 pages long so it's worth "double siding" it when you print it

Thanks very much for all your help.
Dont have one of those Stingo but thanks anyway.
Ill continue with the online form tomorrow and think I will just remove it from the list, as you say i can always add at a later date.
Cheers /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif everybody
