Hi me again
(don't make a post for over a year and there I am two in one day)
I have just bought a Standard Horizon CP180i GPS I have ordered a spare power lead, what size AC/DC adapter should I buy? The tech details in the manuals say:-

Input Voltage 10 vdc - 35vdc unregulated
Input Current 0.8W
Power consumption 520MA max 12V
So I don't get the wrong rating and damage the set any advice most welcome.

Regards Simon (Pugwash)

12v regulated about 600mA. Is as stated.
Best ? Sort your lead to have a cigarette lighter plug on end and plug into an emergency power pack - the sort you get from Halfords etc. for starting your car when battery flat. This will give enough to play with the plotter and is rechargeable for various other uses.

Alternatively if you have an old PC you can use the powersupply from that - it has to be one with a physical on/off switch though ... (12v is the yellow cable that goes to the hard drives - black is the 0v) - I have one rigged up on my workbench to use for testing.

You probably have some old plug packs at home. You want a fairly big one producing 12v at more than .6 amp DC. (make sure it has DC output and make sure you have the right polarity.)
As I read your specifications it will draw 520ma at 12 volts input with a reduced current at higher voltages up to 35 volts in. This apparent contradiction is because it is a regulated switch mode supply in the sat nav which can run on a range of input voltages. It in effect sips the power from the source such that with a higher input voltage it sips less current than it has to at a lower input voltage.
good luck olewill
