to have a sat nav system (with internal batteries that have a reasonable life) that can be used in either of 2 cars and could also be used as a backup system on the boat for long cruises(in case of battery failure) and also could be put in the grab bag. It would have to show lat and long but need not have chart plotter functions. I would also like an anchor alarm function and possibly a speed over the ground readout. Does such an instrument exist at a reasonable price. I anticipate it will be little used but if not too expensive would be nice to have. Most of the sat nav cheap offers don't appear to have other functions or are they available in menus that are not in the spec? Can anyone help please.

Garmin 276C if you want Marine and Car use. I keep one in my grab bag, it's Li battery lasts for up to 15 hrs. You can use it's optional bean bag mount on a car dash board or at a helm close to your eye line. The 276C has to be the portable plotter of the decade so far.

Garmin GPSMAP76 with car kit. Not cheap but will do all you want. In fact your description is pretty much 100% how ours is used.

The budget option is yet another Garmin, the GPSMAP60C - they are great for car or boat use and have good battery life with clear speed as well as lat/long display.

Expect to pay less that 160.00 until stocks run out (Garmin have stopped making them in favour of the same model with a card slot).

Yup deffo the Garmin 276c;- I use it in the car, on the boat, in the inflatable and on my motorbike, just make sure if you want to load plenty of maps GB + France for instance you get a 1gb card [all of the channel charts fit on a 128mb]

Not cheap, best price I found was from marine superstore at port solent at about £850 inc car kit, european roads/cities cd, channel charts, a couple of memory cards and spare leads for bike etc.

Do you mind me asking where you got the 1gb data card? The largest I could find was the 256mb! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif 1gb would be great.

Yes:

My simple TomTom PDA navigation does all that. I take it with me when we are on our summer cruise. No plotter function but GPS with course, speed(in knots) and position. OK as a back-up

cheers
Peter

Re: Yes:

Thanks for your reply. Can you please explain more. Which Tom Tom are you referring to? Or is this an add on with GPS to a PDA - inwhich case which models. Can it also do the anchor alarm? How much did you pay for the setup?

I have a Mio 210 PDA which has a GPS built in. I use it in the car with TOM TOM and on the boat as a back up to my paper charts with Memory Map software. It works for me but is a bit on the small side, but then so is my boat!

Got a 1GB SD card for the camera from Costco for about £23 quid, they do a lot of other card types as well.

If you want to but online try NovaTech or Scan No connection other than as regular customer.

Scan have got a neat combo arm on offer today only for holding a PC that could be handy on board if you've got the space Pic Here

Don't forget that these card have different speed ratings, the cheaper ones will generally be slower than the named brand fast ones. This will probably affect the redraw rate of the maps.

Garmin 276C does not take SD or XD cards, Only Garmin's own standard data cards which are used through out their entire range of fixed mount plotters. The latest small handheld GPSMAP60Cx and GPSMAP76Cx take SD cards.
