Any thoughts on Southern Sardinia for the winter. Thinking of Alghero but am flexible. What is the climate like and how expensive for mooring, lifts etc? Any comments much appreciated

Isn't that where CCScott moored last winter? If so I think he hated it, lots of swell, broken mooring lines and very quiet in town out of season.

Alghero is in N Sardinia - all of which will be very quiet in the winter. The town quay is OK but rather run down and prices are quite high. Its main advantage is being close to Fertilai airport with lots of Ryanair flights to the UK.

Alternatives are Castelsardo, cheap and well-protected, or Arbaitax or even la Maddalena.

When I was in that part of the Med, I used the east coast of Corsica.
Left the boat in Campoloro which is deadly quiet out of season. There's
also Solenzara and Porto Vecchio. I'd prefer Solenzara, large harbour
and small town.Lots of people recommend Rome nowadays.

Castel sardo

we moored in castel Sardo through last winter sept-mar it cost about 600 euros (10M boat) great place to leave a boat but you wouldn't want to spend too much time there.

Cagliari was a dirty harbour with a lot of wash from passing boats when I was last there.
Carloforte is nice though. Quiet but peaceful and attractive.

its far to quite, we thought of wintering opposite bonifaccio its very cheep (in winter) but there wer only four or five boats not enough to get a food shop or cafe to open
We then came on to Bastia perfect if you get a place in the old port Campoloro! Quite very an hours walk to even a small shop (20 minuets by bike)and if you spend winter there you may be silted in in spring! you still have to pay!
solenzara theres a town supermarket can get livly with certain winds, aa few years ago an english person upset the locals by looking after boats so the corsicans blew up the boats!!! thankfull no one was aboard.
sardinia is to quite to expensive and to open corsicas paradise but dont take work from the locals be quite and just relax enjoy your winter

Can agree with you on 1

of your points only - Sardinia is very quiet wherever you are in the winter. However my experience is that it's far, far cheaper than anywhere in Corse: and I've been in both during the last 4 weeks.

IMHO the south is far more boring than the N and I'd be very dubious, unless I was very self-contained, about wintering there.
With one notable exception La Maddalena - due to the San Stefano NATO base, that's probably the liveliest place in the whole of Sardinia during the winter.

i agree, im fully self contained, i have solar panels and inverter (300w) plus a small 1kw generator, diesel taylor heator ,i have at the end of summer salt fish tinned food etc tolast at least a month(id hate to try to last though) a good wine bilge losts of botteled water and 250 gallons of fresh water a moped and bike,plus a good tender with either a 6hp or 25hp outboard depending on the journey.
at first a FREE winter place seems atractive,but no matter how well equiped you are with books CDs videos (sony 8mm cassett size)sw radio internet accsses which i have after some weeks you must have a cafe not to far away a shop, if its expensive and limited the a town within a distance that you go there once a month (minimum) you really need other people around even when you stay with 2 or 3 other boats its not really ideal, as a minimum Bastia or corfu Rome is also an expensive option (though the monthly bus rail pass is very cheep to get you into rome center) theift isent a big problem yet i have to put my laptop on charge so im stopping

one very small thing,email may be ok but many still dont get round toit worse than letter writing, so you will need a post office or the capitans (even if your in a bay)address .
I noticed i wasent getting the post(bills,no escape from them) i wrote to my home post office to ask what they were sending on,it turned out the local postman was collecting my stamps,so make sure no one uses an interesting stamp
When eventually my home post put through a thing to find the post i also sent a note in the local language assuring i wouldent be making any problems i just wanted my post.
It all arived less any stamps!

Sardinia, windy, stormy, dead and boring in the winter, or any time after july august. Alghero, flights are one a day in the winter and only from Stanstead. Harbour surge has to be seen to be believed and it is not cheap, dispite what you may have heard, the restaurants are expensive. I must say the people were very friendly and helpful and the prices of stainless shackles etc, very cheap, I stocked up with at least 200 quids worth of general fittings and screws etc. If you intend to leave the boat and retiurn to UK, then alghero is OK, I live aboard, all the time! By the way, they roll the pavements up in September and dont put them down again until June!
