I'm passing this on from a Cruising Association information service so some may know already.

When will Wee Gordie jump into the honeypot being pulled by the gravy train (Pardon the mixed metaphores!)

Our friends in Ser-Mar have shown us a copy of the actual legislation dated 30.05.06 which summarise as follows

Motor Craft pay per year

14 to 15.99 metre €1000
16 to 19.99 " 2000
20 to 23.99 " 3000
24 to 29.99 " 5000
30 to 60 " 10.000
More than 60 15.000

Sailing craft with an auxiliary engine pay 50%

Craft less than 14 mtr are exempt

Officially these charges apply even if the yacht only stays for a few days in Sardinia however in Alghero according to [our source] it is possible to avoid total payment by making a contract for a year paying only the time that the yacht actually stays in port on account. They say that the yacht can then go around the island with the same contract without paying any more of the tax.

In both Carloforte and Villasimius no mention of the tax was made at all and it is clear that enforcement may be sporadic.

[our source] also said that in view of the intense hostility to the tax throughout the Sardinian yachting related industry it would not be surprising if it died a quiet death. "" </span>

I hope that even mentioning it doesn't bring such a thing down upon our heads but if you were to put it to a referendum "of the people" I'm certain that the current politics of jealousy would bring the thumbs down to us "fat cats messing around in posh yachts bought through the sweat of the proletariat" and the imposition of a wealth tax.

From what I've heard, although the man responsible is still keen, not a lot is happening. Not surprising since most of the Italian government has houses and/or boats in the area...

I have just passage planned from Marseille to Messina, and have deliberately avoided Sardinia for this reason. Its probably what they want anyway - after all, we're only 45 foot, and way too small to bring anything like the dollars they expect from yachts.
