Hi All,

We plan to move from Spain next season over to Sardinia (for 1 season) and then on to mainland Italy, working round to Greece etc.. over further seasons.

We have narrowed down areas in Sardinia that would appear to work for us and are not charging silly premiums to keep the boat berthed for a year (North of island appears to be out for this reason). Our short list is below, any I've missed and should add?

Aquatica Marina - Consorzio Porto di Alghero (we have heard mixed opinons of this port in general although Navily ratings appear good on the whole)
Marine Sifredi Carloforte (we have concerns regarding getting from nearest airport to this marina, involves a ferry, bearing in mind we only spend up to 2 weeks at a time onboard, 6 or 7 times a year)
Porto di Bosa (on the river, maybe too isolated)
Portus Karalis Cagliari

This all subject to even being able to get an annual berth ofcourse.

Please tell me where I am going wrong, suggestions etc..?

Thanks.

I think I recommended Club Aquatica to you before. In Cagliari we stayed at del sol, the place was held together with string and thumbtacks hence the price, both are lively towns.

If airport connection is one of your criterias, PK in Cagliari is the only good choice among the ones you mention.
Alghero would also be good in this respect because it has its own airport, but the flight destinations are half decent only during the summer.

Cagliari, sounds like Marina di Cala del Sole (yep, same exact name as one in Sicily). Definitely fits the description. Prices were cheapest around, furthest marina from town but in walking distance. Showers (well, one each) on the pontoon with drains straight to the harbour, one rusty washing machine in the boatyard, staff was mostly friendly and helpful. Town has everything you can expect from an island capital, except for taxis!

Rumour at the time of our passing through was the old boy who ran it leased from the military, they wouldn't commit to a lease renewal, so he let it fall apart.

Yes, it was your recommendation and subsequent investigation that put it on our list. Only concern about that area is I read the swell can get pretty extreme, lots of broken lines etc?

We don't mind a 1 - 1.5 hour drive from airport to marina, we just didn't want to add a ferry to the mix too?

I am wintering at Marina del Sole in Cagliari which is somewhat ramshackle. I am ashore and was impressed by the care taken by the crew who lifted me out and placed the boat onto the cradle. I'll see how it all works out in the spring!
Keralus is a better marina and close to the town but don't think they have any storage ashore and is much more expensive.
Easy access by 10 minute train to airport at Cagliari, although limited direct flights to UK out if season. Plenty via Milan and others though.
Alghero is also a beautiful town and there are several marinas although I stayed at the town quay.
I can't recommend Carloforte although the marina is good. It's just too quiet and too far from transport.
I spent 6 weeks in Sardinia before lift out so please let me know if you need further information.

Is there a swell issue in this port? Boat would likely be in the water over winter...
That I don't know. I've never been there in bad weather, but the breakwaters are quite substantial.

Edit. It's amazing what fond memories can overwrite. We had around 35kts from the West one morning, all I remember is the wind and rain from a shopping perspective, no drama on the boat.

So I've had some pricing back and in general marinas in Alghero are about 20% more expensive on an annual basis compared to our only Cagliari choice Portus Karalis. We are fine regarding airport links and both areas have some beautiful anchorages for us to explore. So.... What are the pros and cons of these 2 areas?

Thanks again

If you stay at cala del sole, buy a couple of old bikes. It's A long way to the shops.
