Santorini

Skala is the main and most popular (hectic in July & August) but you need to get well north on the quay for perfect shelter from the Meltemi. Ferry washes can be bad. There are a few good anchorages on the south of the island east of Akra Akrotiri where you can get a really peaceful night totally sheltered from the dreaded "M" . Depends on how long you're going to be there and what facilities you want.

Santorini (Thira) although much loved is said to be the sort of place best visited in "someone else's" boat.

Ios. There is a large deserted bay on the south of the island offers sufficent shelter and can only be a 3-4 hour downwind run to Thira.

At least, it was deserted in Sept 2000, when we spent 3 nights hiding from the Meltemi in a little bight in the NW of the bay.

We had a skirt round Thira before returning to Ios. Couldnt find anywhere we felt happy to park, and that in a charter boat. However, I think my latest pilot mentions a new harbour of sorts on E of Thira. Might be worth a look.

There's a neat little harbour on the southern-most point of the island - Vlikhada. Excellent shelter in all conditions. Either go alongside the quay by the entrance, or go bows/stern to against the curved western quay (usually kept clear for visitors).

Excellent (v smart) restaurant/hotel just adjoining the marina which sells Craft beer (nice draft stuff - Bavarian quality, brewed in Greece) and has a great swimming pool. For the price of a beer, enjoy a lovely fresh water wallow . . .

Hire a car or take a taxi to go and visit one of the several vineyards, which produce some fine wines and run 'tastings' for a few euros. Try not to trip over the honeymooners. Good Nautical museum.
