We have a owned a Santander 30 sloop for just over a year. We know of the link with its designer Bill Tripp and a fair bit more, like its Dutch connection and the Tripp 30 similarities, but were were wandering if anyone knows of its UK history. How many were moulded/imported etc. Any other seaworthy ones out there? We have drawings from a company called 'Sailaway' from 1963, but have little else to go on regarding the models British provenance as it were. Our boat was fitted out (moulded?) by Teeside Yacht Services in 1973. The boat is taking shape at last after a fairly comprehensive refit in Totnes over this winter. Info on history would be great. Who last had the moulds?

I bought Camilla from Malcolm Goodall at Hartlepool back in the early 1970s. Malcolm had bought the molds from a commercial yacht building company, which had decided to no longer build the Santander and Camilla was the first off his planned production line.

She was constructed with a spade rudder instead of the keel-hung one - a mistake in my view - but I do not know if any subsequent ones were similarly fitted.

Sorry, I cannot shed any more light than that.

Thanks for the information. The link with the the type and the North East seems consistent. As far as I can tell, the Tripp 30 was moulded in the Utrecht/Amsterdam area before being shipped to the US for fitting out by Seafarer. I guess the moulds, and or hulls themselves made their way due west from Holland to the the UK at some point after the Tripp 30 run finished. Our boat, Duet, has the normal long keel. We bought her in Scotland last year where she was based for some considerable time. Is Camilla here in the UK? We have a small website for our boat, and would add a nice picture of Camilla to it if you so wished. Regards.

I sold Camilla in about 1976 when I moved abroad, also to someone in the Northeast and do not know what subsequently happened to her. She was very roughly finished below (which the price reflected) and I think that the buyer intended a restoration and perhaps selling on.

I do know someone who is seriously thinking of buying one on the south coast and has commissioned a survey for her. I am sure he would be interested in contacting you, I will bring this thread to his notice.

Best, B.

I was in contact with Malcolm Goodall, just the other day, having spotted his post on one of the forums somewhere. I used to work with him when we both lived in Teeside in the 1980s. I don't know anything about the Santander, but I think I still have his e-mail address. PM me if you want to contact him.
