Sanding over caulk?

Hello, I'm in the process of taking off all our boats 2 pack varnish and replacing with Coelan. At present I'm working on the hatches - I've stripped off the old varnish and want to sand down - but in doing so dust gets embedded into the hatches caulking. Once the sanding is complete do I then have to re-caulk? Seems a shame as the existing caulk is good. Prior to applying the Coelan, is there some way to bring back the smooth clean black caulk lines without having to re-caulk?

Hi Ken

I am also applying Coelan - a long process so I hope it lasts as long as promised! I can't answer your specific question but a word of caution just in case you are not aware - make sure your caulking compound is compatible with coelan - not all are. I have had to apply a test area to my decks to see if it is OK as I don't know what they are caulked with. If your caulking compound is not compatible - you will have to re-caulk anyway. (Sorry if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs!)

Thanks, and no I didn't know about incompatible caulks - seems like I'll have to redo in any case as I don't know what type was used previously.

Yes - read that thanks. I have to say I am finding the number of coats stated in this guide to achieve 1mm minimum thickness optimistic. To use 1ltr of coelan per meter squared will take me about 15 coats when thinned by about 15-20% - I have already done 10!
