Hello to all,
I have two coils of Samson doublebraid rope, one is 7/16" and the other is 9/16" in diameter. Can anyone tell me what diameter fids I would use to splice them please? I have a few lengths of aluminium bar that I would like to turn down (in the lathe) in order to make the fids for splicing this rope. I know that you can buy a set of Samson fids from the USA for the job but would prefer a wee challenge and make them myself. I've been given the length dimensions but I'd like to know the diameters.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

samson rope splicing fid diameter.

Hello to all,
Just thought I'd let you know that I found out that the fid diameters for splicing doublebraid rope are normally 75-80% of the diameter of the rope to be spliced.
All the very best,
Alan..............

I have just bought a universal fid from Jimmy Green Marine. The instructions say it is suitable for 8, 10 and 12mm diameter rope. Hope to try it this weekend splicing a new eye on a new main halyard.
