Antibes looks great value. St Trop not bad either. Who'd have thought Spain (with exceptions) so much more than France?

I dont supose you were at Sant Carles about 3 weeks ago.
A big Squadron came in and left early.
SWMBO said that someone on board knew us.

BTW
Prices very much depend upon the time of the year.
San Antonio (Ibiza) - Mid June - 160 euros for 20m
Ibiza Town - Nueva - Mid June 400 euros for 20m
Sant Eulalia - Mid June - 220 euros for 20 m - reduced to 118 euros (for special offer I didnt understand but gratefully accepted)
Barcelona Port Vell - end of October - 78 euros - for 20m

My experience of Mahon was 87 euros in April - again for 20m

Most of the above prices are ex tax, electric and water

Antibes gave you a special rate Lozzer. I'm telling you, one of the witches had a twinkle in her eye. You should have got your coat - you'd definitely pulled :-)

Ref Mahon, I think I'd go and anchor on the north side for free!

Us owners should make something about this RIP off to berth your own boat.

May be a website or something distributed to well suited channels. In the past it was just Porto Cervo and a couple of Marinas, now is becoming everywhere the same....

North side?
Where abouts, jfm?

There are several spots inside Mahon harbour where you can anchor, all on the N side. Cala Rata almost right opposite the marina berths is ok, and tucked in between the first island and the shore (39deg52N 4deg18E) is a good spot though you need lots of chain unless you're early enough to get one of the shallower spots. These aren't the most beautiful anchorages on the island, but operfectly nice spots to have sheltered overnight stop. I anchored out in the more usual calas overnight too

That's óne of ther nice things about mahon. It's a safe haven if you cant rent a berth or dont want to or just didn't bother. Also if you want a lot fuel it's best to tie to fuel dock late the night before. I was going to do this but elected instead to anchor at the lat long above, then motored to the fuel about 7am ready for 8am opening. Unfortunately a Sq70 had tied up the night before and needed 4000litres, urgh, so I had to hang off for a couple of hours (shame no-one rafts up in med)

Thanks for that.

Funny, I dont remember that cala opposite the Sunseeker berths.
We did a little "drive" up and down Mahon during our return trip. We had Roger_Rat, djefabs and Whitelighter on board but I think our attention was caught by all the action on the south side. Big ships go up and down as well from memory. We did go through the little gap into Cala Teulera (the little anchorage behind the first island on the way into Mahon) but I thought that this anchorage was a bit exposed to winds etc.

Fuel berth
On our return run, we arrived late (after middnight) - after a bit of a rough run over from Carloforte (Sardinia) - I knew that it would be a really easy place to approach in the dark - and yes - the fuel berth was empty so we tied up there for the night before refueling and moving on.

We really must go back to Menorca

Agree with that. Mahon is one of the safest harbours you can find in the Med which is why the British Navy captured it in 1708. Yes there are various anchorage areas in the harbour and you dont have to pay Sunseeker berthing prices. When we visited a couple of years ago, there were pontoon moorings laid adjacent to the little island diagonally opposite the Sunseeker berths which are relatively cheap although you have to dinghy to the shore. Alternatively just drop your hook in the middle of the harbour taking care to keep out of the fairways which are used by large ferries.

Ibiza has always been outrageously expensive. Rumour has it that Botafoch were charging €375 a night in August last year for a 15m berth. I paid €180 a night in early June back in 2005 and nearly as much in Formentera

Berthing prices here in Croatia are more reasonable but still high, about €90-120 per night for 16-17m berth. In fact berthing rates are very much slanted towards ripping off the July/Aug visitor but encouraging the annual berth holder. I will pay €1900 per month in July/Aug in Marina Frapa near Split but 'only' €8500 for the whole year if I agree to take an annual berth. The trouble is that there are no direct flights to Split from London from Nov to April so out of season boating would be a pain

Please be aware that anchoring in Mahon harbour is now forbidden!!!!

As a concession, due to pressure, Cala Taulera ( much reduced space) it is now possible to anchor for 3 days max.

See Liveaboard for details.

Are you sure its banned outright or just that the authorities are charging for anchoring? They seem to be following the lead of Ibiza Town harbour where anchoring behind the new breakwater was banned a few years ago and, just to send a message, a few yachties who defied the ban were fined several thousand €.
There seems to be quite a strong Green lobby in the Balearics who have managed to persuade the authoriries to close or restrict many anchorages either temporarily or permanently with a view to protecting the sea bed. The trouble is that not enough mooring buoys are being laid to compensate for the reduction in anchorages and, as we know, the marinas are always full and v expensive. The result of this kind of attitude and other issues like matriculation tax is that boaters are being driven away from the Balearics at a time when Spain needs every € of income it can get. The Balearic authorities need to find a better balance between protecting their environment and retaining boating tourism. For example, the charter industry alone in the Balearics is worth €300m+ pa to the islands economy and it seems like madness to me to drive this kind of business away

According to people there and visitors all anchoring is banned except in Cala Taulera, where now it is permitted to anchor for a max of 3 days.

Apparently the police are not happy with this as presumably it creates a lot of work for them. BTW they don't work at week-ends! Whether this situation will continue, who knows but at present it is fact. It appears Mahon has a death wish as far as tourism is concerned. The locals do need to get themselves organized and petition the powers that be sadly it's too late for some of them.

We were quoted 139.12 euros per night (incl water & elec) for 12.65 x 4.06 mtrs!

Why have they done it? Someone has mentioned 'quality tourism' more probably because they are a greedy bunch and of course yachties are wealthy! -- greed, jealousy and lack of a brain is my personal opinion.

When we visited Menorca 3 yrs ago, the locals were complaining about the lack of visitors not the wrong sort! In fact we were surprised how easy it was to get into restaurants in the middle of August. I still dont understand why the authorities would do this; there must be what they think is a good reason. Even if anchored yachts contribute less to the economy than marina berthed ones, they still add to the ambiance of a location which in itself attracts visitors

Hi Hurricane

It was me that came in, I am sorry I didnt come by but I was Kn****rd from a long weekend at the F1 and then the trip up from Valencia/

It was nice to meet your wife though.

To be honest I know we can anchor off and we have stabilisers to keep it nice and flat but the noise they make means we reall dont sleep much in the crew cabin. The high pitch whine in the crew cabin is almost untolerable, ok in other parts of boat.

With regard to Mahon, if you get there at about 1915 you can often stay on the fuel quay overnight with the promise of filling up. 1.16€ pl

Or as JFM said the north side is ok. However you will get plenty of wash from the ferries. There is a small cala at the entrance on the right, well worth a look.

Kind regards

Lozzer
