I've been informed by Fairline that Sam Newington died last week. Sam was the son of Fairline founder Jack Newington and ran the business for over 25 years. He is fondly remembered by many of the guys still working at the Fairline factory.

I'm sure he was thrilled so see Fairline in great hands and celebrating 50 years of boat building.

Sad news. Yes I'm sure he would have been happy to see Fairline rise from the ashes under current management but at the same time, it must have been hard for him to witness the machinations that got it into difficulty in the first place. One of the key movers and shakers of the UK motorboat building industry in recent years. Sympathies to his family

That is very sad. Thank you Pete for informing us. Although my customer relationship with Fairline started long after Sam exited the business, I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he was delightful. I also met his son, through work, back in the late 1990s. Sam's business achievements are well known of course and he is a credit to UK boatbuilding and to manufacturing industry generally. He will be very fondly remembered. RIP, and condolences to his family.

I hope that MBY do a decent obituary on Sam as he had a fascinating life and really established Fairline. The Fairline 50th Birthday book has 10 or so pages dedicated to Sam and they could do a lot worse than including it verbatim in the magazine.

Incidentally I wasn't aware that Sam was a fighter pilot, hence the RAF inspired naming of Fairline boats (Squadron, Phantom, Fury, etc).
