Salcombe

We always anchored up off Hallwell point in iirc about 3-4 meters... It can get pretty busy up there on a BH, and occasionally we have anchored a tiny bit further upstream on the north side beyond the line of moorings... However this is also the only place we have had problems as we were nailed by a wayfarer from the icc causing considerable damage...

With your draft I would think getting a bit further around the corner would be viable, if you can get up there out of site then you might also avoid the Hm looking for his dosh. The water taxi is difficult to persuade to come up that far, but there is a excellent landing on Hallwell point with some nice paths for walking.

Holding is excellent and I have sat up there happily in 20knts... Never had issues with wind over tide either.

I am anchored just off Hallwell in this picture, the southerly is in too little water for us to the north of the point, you should be able to go even more to the right and around the corner. The pic is close to high water... The area dries
Quite a bit.

Thanks guys. That's about where I was planning to anchor, or maybe a bit further up. Anyone been up as far as Frogmore? How about drying out at Kingsbridge?

I dragged all night a few weeks ago, just below the Salt Stone. I think there are shells and hard sand, you can often tell unyielding holding; my set up is normally reliable.

As above, with your draught you can tuck further in/up an, no doubt, find better ground.

As P'dog suggests, just off Halwell Point is a favourite spot, and is shown as such on the chartlet below.

There's plenty of room further up - provided an eye is kept on the 'sounder - just west and NW of Salt Stone beacon, then in the channel running up towards No 1 red can buoy and to the east of the RW spar buoy between Gerston and Charleton Points.

Most tranquil at night with a big moon.....

We always wanted to go further up Frogmore, but with our draft I never anchored past the entrance at Hallwell... It does dry extensivley and I can't see any reason if your happy with that to not go up there... I have seen other cats go up past Hallwell and anchor to stbd around the corner... It's mostly mud iirc.

Spent 4 days dried out in Kingsbridge earlier in the season hiding from some weather. We are lift keel and dried upright in soft mud attached to the visitors pontoon adjacent to the leisure centre which was handy for showers. Good provisioning stop.

We spent a few days anchored just south of Salt Stone this year, it took a few goes to get our CQR to set properly. It much more peaceful around there that in the scrum on the visitor pontoon, you are also close to the ICC sailing club who allow visiting yotties access to their showers for a small fee.

On a serious note, watch out if anchoring on the Eastern side opposite the town; a tidal eddy swirls down the shore and can unset anchors.

If it's forecast to blow a gale get round to ' the bag ' , there are boat taxi's from there and it's still within tender range ( with outboard ) if the weather is OK.

Staying on the visitors' moorings in a gale is jolly uncomfortable with little chance of sleep, guess how I know !
