Tower Inn!

Walk about a mile inland to the village. Look for the old crumbly tower. Used to be a monestary. They have the single best collection of real ales down the long length of the bar you are ever likely to come across (outside of a certain pub in Lower Lambs Conduit St, in London), along with a further smaller array of superb high quality ciders down the shorter bar.

I once, in my youth, tried to drink my way down the real ale bar..the bar won..just! and it made for a very entertaining evening with my girlfriend driving my Mini Moke home while I 'windsurfed' off the roll bar /forums/images/icons/blush.gif and her grown up sister and hubbie driving along behind us. Hubbie had a rock band, and was in a similar state to me, and I was blamed. We'd been watching the blue grass festival which they used to hold there regularly.

Thanks for the entertaining post, it described the feelings of solo trips in a small powerboat really well. Sorry to hear about the problems with Harbour Officials - in my experience they are usually very helpful.
Wonder if they will give me a discount on my dues for this ? No, they are not that helpful!

Most of the guys are fine, particularly the young lads. It's just the one guy that seems a little crotchety. He doesn't jump in to do taxi runs when things are busy like the others do , so he wasn't too popular with the other staff that weekend either

Hi Brendan,

good story - albeit i feel better for reading it than experiencing it i must say!

Question then - i have the VP 4.3 engine... which i believe is similar to yours... what is this ratchet that you can use to tighten the belt then???? and more importantly - where!

Cheers,

Craig.

OK
one of the pulleys that the serpentine belt goes around has a bolt through the middle that can be loosened, allowing the pulley to swing. Push it in, and there is enough clearance to get the belt on. It's the upper left pulley on mine but easy to spot.

I was trying to tension the belt by using a lever to apply pressure, then tighten bolt to hold belt tensioned. This was OK, but not tight as desirable

Turns out the the bolt through the pulley has two 'bolts' through the centre. A small inside one, and a larger outer one. I'd been using the outer one.

If you loosen off the big bolt, you can put the belt on Ok. Then use socket on smaller, and ratchet the belt tight. Hold the socket here putting tension on the belt, then tighten off the big bolt with a spanner. Done

You should only be able to turn the belt halfway with your fingers if it's tensioned enough

My original attempts would have got me home, maybe with the odd bit of retensioning, but not really tensioned enough for permanent solution.

RYA seem to have plenty of courses for diesel engine, but why don't they do petrol courses?

Bleedin heck Haydn! It was over a year ago!!!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Had a good trip round to Lyme Bay last weekend. Got a bit lumpy on occasions, and managed to turn Iditatarod into a submarine, much to amusement of other boats who howled with laughter..

However, I don't know why all the scuttlebutters were winging about F6/F8 on Sunday round Plymouth, and Poole and Solent, it was a lovely run back from Weymouth!!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Just back!...ballcocks! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif It really was a nice run back. Had a bit of a WOT from Weymouth for a few miles, along with 2 other boats out of the little fleet, then stopped to wait for everyone to catch up.

Round one of the headlands I really did turn Iditarod into a submarine - took one green water over the windscreen but ducked and it just went down my back2 minutes later I went straight in!! Boat behind said it would have made a great photo - just the bum of Iditarod sticking out of a wave. Ciggies soaked!!! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

First time ever I've had to change clothes after a dunking, as was drenched and didn't have drysuit or wet weather gear on. Stopped off at Studland to sunbath, but huge black clouds over Solent and blowing offshore for the route home. On way from Studland to Solent, was windy and big rolling seas, but able to keep up over 25/30 knts without a problem....would have gone faster but had a little fleet with us and most cruise at 22knts or thereabouts.

Some of scuttlebutters reckon wind blew up to F6 or more, but sea conditions downwind were actually not that bad, though one of the other boats were getting really rather wet onboard. My little submarine seems to enjoy these conditions.....OK, well I do anyway! <g>

Funniest time I hit a big wave. Had a [mate] with us. Would he come and sit upstairs where we could keep an eye on him...No, would he sit down.....No... So anyway and oh by the way, he'd just had a triple heart bypasss three weeks before!!!... Anyway we were just going round Plymouth break water when this humongest wave jumped up. I reached for the throttles and missed!! There was this great scream from down below. Daft bugger was stood by the back doors. The lazardy...Cellar door opened and both him and the carpet had gone straight down!!!!.........../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Ah well as hlb's resurrected this old fred I'd better report that sadly the chap selling books by the old tank has now died.

However the whole area is still definitely worth a visit, maybe have some sort of forum get together in Dartmouth or Salcombe?

No, didn't get that far. Was really a bit bumpy after lunch in Lulworth, and most boats headed straight for Weymouth. A few of us went for a spin round Portland, but not long distance cruising conditions really. Went down to take some photos of Chesil Beach and conditions round that side actually quite nice, but by that time we were ready to head back to marina for meal and drinks

Brendan
Did you get down as far as Beer in the end?

As I said on the scuttl it was very blustery from the north west on Saturday but the sea was ok only 1 to 2 foot waves and a little spray... no problems for you, although I had a hanky up so i could get back to the Exe. Sometimes a big engin on the back is a help!!!

try again later in the year?
