I will of course check with my Almanac (which is on board) but I'm planning to visit Salcombe next Saturday from Dartmouth. Weather currently looks settled, however, we will be arriving a couple of hours after LW

SWIMBO has heard horror stories about the bar. So if any of you have up to date local knowledge what is the charted depth at the bar please, I'm told the deepest water is to the west.

Thanks in advance.

Very much so - hug right in under the cliffs.

(Caveat that I haven't been there for three or four years now)

Pete
I was thinking of writing the same but I too haven't been there for a few years. The deepest water isn't in line with the markers but one way of proceeding is to follow other boats in, not always good advice but it should work here.

I'm often get myself stressed and wound up about these situations - and then discover that it's no drama or problem at all once there... but of course that's cos I've bothered, like you, to care enough to get to the bar/race/cill etc at the right time an in favourable conditions... with Salcombe, (IMHO) a couple of hours after low water and anything other than a strong northerly and the harbour entrance won't present any real challenge - the deeper water is said to be closer to the rocks on the western edge, I went in & out a cpl of weeks ago and dutifully followed the transit marks in with no scares, which also kept me on the right (& correct) side of the channel too. Salcombe's lovely, this was my first time there, will return, if you have time then after a night off the town and the convenience that brings, anchoring all alone in peaceful Frogmore Creek is very nice, only the sound of cows and owls to break the silence... bliss!
