Sailtainer in boom furling

I have an issue with our mainsail pulling out of the luff track on our Sailtainer in boom furling system.
I recently asked a sailmaker to renew the bolt rope, and they fitted a new 5mm rope.
Now the sail will only raise 2/3rds of the way up.

I am not keen on dropping the bolt rope size down in fear of the luff then pulling out the track. The sailmaker assures me the 5mm is the correct size and it may be a problem with the track.

Does anyone have any clue as to where I can find some new track? Sailtainer or other brand that might work?

Thanks in advance

Have you been up and had a look at the blockage?
Yes, been up the mast several times.
I've also run a shirt section of bolt rope up and down the track with washing up liquid to clean it up. It's not a dead stop, it's a slow grind to a halt.
When up the mast, I can see that the top section of track is slightly, only .5mm, tighter than the lower sections

Hi James,

I'm just about to install a Sailtainer system on my Moody 376.

I noticed that you "quoted" a page from the installation manual. I had a copy of this but now can't find it.

I would be immensely grateful if you could send/attach a copy of yours as I particularly need the "Parts" pages to have a custom gooseneck made.

I shall report on my experience and hope something may even be useful to you.

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Steve

PS: There were several kinks in my track where the walls had collapsed. We used an M10 (10mm) threaded rod to open and straighten the track, then applied a heat gun to reshape the sides. This appears to be a success.

Maybe nothing wrong with the system. Are you sure the main halyard is not jamming?

Hi I have only just come across this message whilst looking for something else and you may well have sorted this problem by now. I don't know where you are based but if near UK, the agent for Sailtainer here are Jeckell Sails who I am sure would be able to help you. i have always found them very helpful as they are a family run sailmaker. I believe the track that is used, is a well known american product, whose name escapes me at the moment. Tuffluff or something similar if i recall.

Hi, fo those with a Sailtainer on boom furling system. I bought a boat with this system fitted a year or so ago. The sail was very difficult to raise and even worse to lower. We sailed Scotland las tsummer with the boat, hoping it would improve. It didnt. I spent time tweeking the boom angles to find the best position I could, This did improve matters a little, but still not acceptable, The Luff of the sail was showing some really bad wear, I think the previous owner had also struggled somewhat. I decided to call a sailmaker in and had the luff tape replaced with one that had a kevlar weave.
In removing the sail I found the latch pin at the front of the sail was not locked into its groove, and too much tension was on the rear hook of the sail, pulling the whole sail towards the rear of the boom, This couldnt be seen as the sail was a little too long and even when fully up there was still a couple of wraps left on the boom.
I now have the sail back, and loaded on correctly, I can now hoist the sail fully easily at the mast, or from the cockpit by hand, (we do have a powered winch for the main sail in the cockpit,) also furling away is easily done by hand now.
I think the improvements have come about by a, the kevlar luff tape, the rope size is 5mm, This tape is low friction, and b, ensuring the sail is locked in at thefront of the boom and that the boom is set within the correct tollerance.
Looking forward to fully testing this year.

Hello and welcome to the forum

If you are in the UK Jeckell Sails should be able to advise. If in another country find the local agent.
