I've just picked up my sails and Stack pack cover from W Sails (Leigh on Sea) Cost for a wash and minor repairs for main and genoa, together with some repairs and stitching for the stack pack was a very reasonable £80 (cheques or cash only) for my Bavaria 32. Sails only would have been around £60 to £70.

Also, literally opposite W Sails is Reliable Fire Protection Services. They are offering boat owners a free inspection of home/boat fire extinguishers. They exchanged a used 0.8kg powder extinguisher for new 1.0kg replacement at a cost of less than £12. Good value I reckoned.

Contact details are:

W Sails: 01702 714550 (Leigh on Sea SS9 2AX)

Reliable Fire Protection Services: 01702 715226 (Leigh on Sea SS9 2AS)

Usual comment....No connection with either company except as a satisfied customer.

I have found that my sails last much longer if I avoid washing them at all or at most have them rinsed with water. Has anyone else noticed this.

I have used W Sails and agree they are very reasonable.

I haven't had mine washed this year. Last year I saw someone in the marina on a calm day hoist their sails bit by bit and hose them down (not a pressure wash) and let them dry in the sun. Thought I might try that if they look a bit grotty from being on the boat all winter.
