I've never understood that expression. Does it mean that you sail with a broomstick between your legs, or have a cauldron of bats wings & newts eyes on the go?

It is a cryptic message meaning that you have been temporarily excluded from the Global Positioning System in order to force you to get some practice with more traditional means of navigation. They do this by remotely shorting your antenna to ground.

To prevent future occurances keep an old sextant, astrolabe or even a bunch of old sticks tied together with non synthetic cord, polynesian wise, in a box somewhere on board - no checks are made as to whether you can actually use them or that they work. Let the world know you have them by frequently referring to the fact that you have a sextant (or whatever) on board and that no sailor worth his salt would be without one.

I personally keep a sextant in its box very close to the chart table and where it is readily seen and have never had my GPS antenna shorted to ground.

Sorry for being serious in the midst of all the jocularity, but could you borrow another aerial and plug it in to see if it is an external fault?

Just a thought.

Re: Bunch of sticks?

Didn't think Jimi's manhood would reach the water after the shark attack so didn't bother mentioning that one.

Shorting to ground. Rod Carr has decided that there are too many Yachtmasters depending on electronic aids for navigtation and has selectively selected the disablement tab on the funtionality bar. I think it means you are supposed to use paper charts, leadlines and baggywrinkles for the forthcoming period.
This will be good for you as there are no GPS units on the Dunstaffnage Charter fleet and Claymore will be so far ahead that you wont be able to follow us.
