Anyone know any Sailors lore? such as, "Wind from the East, 10 days at least" or "If to starboard red appears, tis your duty to keep clear" and all that sort of thing.

and a very boring, but genuinely old one

mackerel skies & mares tails
make tall ships carry low sails,

or if you want to sound really into seafaring history, some old fart said (of nelsons navy) that they survived on "rum, sodomy & the lash" .

something there for every taste I think, although putting it into practice today may raise a few eyebrows, not least with SWMBO, and not to mention the Dept of Work & Pensions!! (However The Right Hon Mr Prescott is an ex Merchant Navy steward, so you never know!)

For seasickness (and an upset stomach) - lots of Lucozade - same reason: it tastes the same both ways. And any left inside is absorbed more quickly than porridge.

Another one - (modern naval I think) "Only a fool gets cold at sea"

Not sailors lore but a good memory aid for day shapes:

A diamond between your balls would make you maneouver with difficulty

and the the lights are what it would look like!

"rum, sodomy & the lash"
or
rum, bum & baccy!

The three most useless things on a boat:

An umbrella, a ladder & a naval officer.
