I have used a Husqvarna for many years but it is beginning to fail now. I asked the repair man about the best replacement for the sort of work I did. He suggested a Frister & Rossman model 25/35, or an early electric Brother (c50s/60s). Both would be available very cheaply and offer basic zig-zag. I do like the Husqvarna however bacause it has a slow speed/high torque gear which I have found very useful...Brian

My wife replaced her Read's Sailmaker with a Pfaff Select 1536. does everything we need (goes through about 5 layers of leather I think) and is smaller and lighter than the Read's. Only disadvantage is needs 240v (inverter copes fine when necessary). We were advised that this model outperforms the more expensive Pfaffs for the things we want to do, but is cheaper as it lacks some of the fancier features. very pleased in 2 years so far.
