Hello!

My very tired main on my little 1981 ETAP 22 ripped from the leach about a foot above the foot last night, and it's time to finally admit I need a new'un.

I am based in Lisbon, but am coming home to B'Sea for the whole of August, so I could potentially pick it up

Everything here is at least 50% more than at home for boats, especially sails, and considering the weak pound I am looking for advice on Sailmakers closer to 'home'.

Searching through the posts I find Crusader, Dolphin, Advantage, Suffolk as a start.

Any views on these and any others please?
(and which niche do each fit into - e.g. I remember Dolphin as the local one with cheaper but solid sails from 30 years ago in my Mirror days, but guess things have changed?)

I am looking for cheaper end, but good quality (especially considering the UV down here), and for cruising, not racing.

As an aside, 10 mins after the sail ripped, the motor overheated and stopped (shortly after the swinging footbridge closed behind us!) and we had to be towed in by a motor boat, after drifting alongside a tug. A few language problems; my crew was an inexperienced German, the crew on the jamaican tug were russian, and the motorboat skipper was portuguese, but it made for an interesting evening, and no damage done. The motor problem was just a blocked pee-hole exit, and I have wanted a new sail for ages, so a positive outcome all round really :)

Ta very much in advance

Dolphin and Quantum

Glad you made it in safely, Lisbon is not an easy entrance so you were lucky to find a friendly tow.

With regards sails on the East Coast I can certainly vouch for both Dolphin and Quantum sails. Dolphin made me a new Genny 2 years ago on the strength of some rigging measurements and some photos of my boat under sail. Your Etap will have some readily available measurements so it should be relatively easy for them to reproduce a new main for you. They use excellent materials, I am sure they also have an economical version that is produced in China under license and shipped to wherever you need?

Quantum are at SYH on the Orwell (they used to be Parker and Kay). They have helped me with repairs in the past and laundering. They have excellent customer service and are very responsive to email so should be be easy to communicate with from Portugal.

I am sure that there is a loft at B'sea (and I think Mersea) but I do not know anything about them I am afraid.

New Main

I had a good experience with Hyde Sails 18 months ago. Buying right now means that you may find it a little difficult to get the discounts available through the winter when business is traditionally "slack".

Have used Quantum for my last 2 sets (different boats!!) and would recommend them for the build qualityty etc - not necessarily the cheapest tho!.
Others locally include East Coast Sails - v helpful with my recent inquiry. Crusader on South Coast likewise.
