Does anyone know who owns this yacht? It is 120-150' long and has just destroyed a large piece of reef off the coast of Roatan.

It is incredible that someone who must be a proffesional skipper would drop anchor over shallow reef at one the worlds top diving destinations. The whole area is a marine park. How can anyone be entrusted with a yacht if they have such blatant disregard for our fragile environment.

I was sad too see it flying the red duster, hoping i could blame it on American sailing qualifications rather than British! I hope the boat is impounded though - they deserve to lose it for what they have done here! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hi
Very interested to read your post from Roatan. I worked on the island in 1977 preparing studies for tourism develpoments and again in 1982 preparing an Environmental Control Plan. Our recommendation was to set up a national Marine Park has this been carried out? I see from TV that the island is really developing now and even has a surfaced road!! No doubt the availability of mobile phones has seen the death of the old VHF system that we used to communicate hotel to hotel and the main land. Must vist again sometime.

Quite easy....e.g The freight ferry that operates out of Troon the "European Highlander" is owned by P and O but sails under the Bermudan flag as she is registered in Nassau.
It has nothing to do with the nationality of the owner but in what country the vessel is registered in and therfore who's law's she sails under. Another example many UK company oil tankers are registered in Moldovia and sails under the Moldovan flag and rules.

We still use VHF to communicate hotel to hotel. The rate of development is frightening, the biggest problem is that the construction has destroyed the run off so the old problem silt suffocating the reef is occurring. The destruction of the mangroves is also reducing the fish population.

There is a marine park but it was being very poorly policed until this week, when there has been an attempt to breath new life into it, with a new police boat and dedicated policeman. Hopefully a large fine imposed on Beagle V will help fund all this!

If you want to see more about Roatan check out my website a non commercial website providing information for tourists to the bay islands.
