Looks a bit more complicated now! How does it work if I want to sail with the dogs from say Gigha, Glenarm, Bangor, Ardglass, Douglas IoM, Dublin, Waterford, Falmouth. Will this be possible in 2021 ?

I was pondering the idea for next summer, so hopefully it will be Covid OK then. My great great grandfather/mother were Manx and the family goes back generations there in Lonan so I'd like to visit. As I understand it traveling fom the UK to NI & Eire with pets will now not be possible on a yacht but it would be good to get clarification. I really don't want to put the dogs into kennels in order to do this trip. This regaining control business seems to have some drawbacks.

Nice to see that you’ve had a few ’helpful’ replies. We often used to travel UK to Ireland (no probs) with our dog and I will be very interested to find out the future rules.
To do so I will research it through as many sites as possible and post my findings on here for your benefit (and other interested parties). Unfortunately I’m not sure that the rhetoric above helps very much - I’m not sure if any of them (a) have dogs or (b) know the future...

Didn’t think you were allowed to take them to EU previously? NI should have been ok but not sure now.
You could take them to the EU without any issues. It was returning to the UK that was the problem.

Btw, how did you join the forum in 2012 but only make your first post this year? Just curious, nothing more.

I too have taken the dogs to NI from Scotland in the past without requiring any formalities, this seems to have changed. It appears that you need to enter NI or Europe through a designated point of entry but on return from NI you don’t but from Europe, you do. Pet travel to Europe from 1 January 2021

Jimi. Thanks for this, it makes interesting reading. The ‘Ireland’ loophole was always there - sail from France to Eire, then up the Irish Coast and back to Scotland/England without needing to resort to Pet Passports at all...
We are in a strange position as UK Passports holders with a dog who has a EU (Spanish) Pet Passport. I’m guessing that our dog doesn’t need an AHC to go back to the EU but who knows??? Coming back would appear to be the same for us as pre Brexit (i.e. visit to vets 2-4 days before re-entry and Passport stamped to show that we have administered worming tablet).
Now if we could only use the dog as our ‘spouse‘ to get over the 90 day rule that would be a good thing!!!

You have always been allowed to sail with dogs to Southern Ireland. We came from the Azores to Southern Ireland earlier this year then on to Holyhead. You cant sail from France to England with dogs. I am not sure how this will change in 2021

We took a cat to Ireland once a few years back. Checked with Irish dartment of agriculture who told me that there were no for formalities for pets into or out of Ireland from UK. Equally, DEFRA weren’t interested. Looks like things might be changing but remember that Ireland and UK have a common travel area even post Brexit which sits outside the EU rules on freedom of movement.

At the side of my chair I have a 2015 almanac (new one sealed and in the boat) so granted things may have changed but it says no pets UK <> EU with some non EU countries also included. Something about only authorised routes, I took that to mean ferries.

Haha, can’t have secrets on here! Surprised its as late as 2012!

I’ve wanted a boat for over a decade, either too much works, not enough work, children, house moves or beggar all to be had has put pain to the idea. This year the stars aligned an I’m a proud owner of a Rival 31.

So over the last 6 months (well the bits I could get in the marina) I’ve been busy putting my stamp on it as I can’t sail it! Been out on her with others, day skipper in 2 weeks, in Scotland!

You could take pets to Europe but had to come back in via an authorised route. There were no restrictions on pets between uk and Eire (or NI)

You cant sail France to England with pets. You can sail England to France or anywhere in EU. You can sail France, Ireland, UK. To bring a pet back from France it must be in a car on a ferry or the tunnel. You can bring a pet back from Holland to Harwich as a foot passenger on the Stena ferry. Those are your options as of today. Who knows how things will change 2021 but it wont get easier. This is fact not here say since I have done all of these legally

The common travel area means no rules for pets either as I understand it

I have two cats on Spanish passports (rescued there while cruising the med) and when I came to Ireland from France by ferry they had to have all the passport checks and recent rabies jab but when a year later we went Ireland to UK we were told no checks were needed between the two islands - I suspect that this will not have changed due to the CTA

What I can find out is if my cats can still cruise Europe on their EU passports when accompanied by a UK citizen. Again I suspect their Spanish passports will be respected but will a UK vet stamp for rabies boosters ? No one seems to know but I think they will see the Spanish passport and be happy. My cats don't leave the boat though so in 3 years with them in the Med no one ever checked until we returned by ferry to Ireland, Of course now I have no idea whether we will have customs inspection in every new country if we go again
