Sailing Training Course - Recommendations

Some advice please.

TB has 'persuaded' me that it would be fun to do a Sailing Training Course/holiday next month. She seems keen which is a first with boats!

I should have asked here before but we quite like the look of a smalll company called Canary Sail based in La Gomera , Canary isles. They operate a new Bav 36 and we'd hope to do a week with RYA Instructor plus just ourselves.

Has anyone any experience of this company or alternate suggestions? We have ZERO practical sailing experience.

This organisation is not listed in the 2003 book of recognised practical training establishments so should be approached with caution. Of course, they could have received recognition during this summer, so it would be worth checking. Their stationery should carry the RYA Training Centre logo.

They may well employ qualified RYA instructors, but unless they are recognised they cannot issue RYA certificates and so you do not know what standards they are working to.

My advice after 30 years in the game is to get a copy of the RYA list of recognised practical training centres, choose a school and then sign up for the Competent Crew Practical Course. There are several in the Med, one in the Canaries (at Puerto Rico), one in Thailand, and a couple in France.

Absolutely agree with all the above - except that the logo on the ad is not a cast iron guarantee. Some disreputable operators have been known to put it on their ads without RYA recognition. You can always phone RYA to cheque if in doubt. Good luck and enjoy your week - most people do.

Try "Saracen Sailing" or "Hamble Balearics", both RYA Schools, operating out of Alcudia - Mallorca, if you want a 'warm' starter sail.

A general thanks to everyone for responding. Thought I was getting blanked for being a stinky!. i will try the other warm water establishments but look for a 'tidal' place to work from.

There are three or four schools in Gibraltar....

Warm (even now), tidal (any further into the Med, and it isn't), interesting (ok, not Gib particularly, but odds are you will go across the Straights to Ceuta, and Smir in Morocco).

I did CompCrew and DaySkip there 8/9 years ago, and enjoyed it...
