Have chartered in a good bit of the Med, but now going to a wedding in Athens, so will be doing a circuit sail back to the city starting next Sat, for a week. Have looked at Heikell and guidebooks, but can't decide whether to turn to port and hit the western Cyclades then across to Hydra and back via Aegina or to catch the meltemi across towards Hydra first, then maybe make it to Spetses before legging it back. Any preferences out there? Or other itineraries? We like to anchor, but have some newbies on board so probably need to get some quayside tavernas in too. We don't need much nightlife - no kids and all happy with a good bottle of wine... Thanks in advance...

Hydra? NO!

you can expect to get hemmed in by several layers of yachts top and tailing out from the quay and everyman and his wife - and noisy teenagers crawling - more likely CLATTERING! all over your decks in the small hours. holding is bad there too. Spetses Baltiza Creek is virtually impossible to get a berth in. Getting more towards the Argolic - NO Meltemi! you will find Ermione is good as is Porto Heli but we like Astrous and Navplion best - climb the Palamidi for good exercise and a fantastic view. Plaka (Leonhidion) is a favourite too but it is right at the southern end of the Argolic gulf. don't expect too many "quite little bays" there just aren't many in the Saronic Gulf. Out of the way but well worth the visit is Epidavros with it's fantastic theatre and not to forget the tiny harbour of Vathy, tucked in to the west side of the Methana penninsular. it is enchanting. beware the fire fighting water carrying planes picking up on the approaches though.
