Sailing record now 65.37 knots!

Starboard tack only. So it's a 65kt blast one way, a 2kt paddle back. Or maybe they should just keep going. At that speed they'd get right round in under a fortnight.

You have to admire it.. 65Kts is impressive and I am sure they will make it go faster.. But on only one tack and pointing at a beach you won't get too far on a round the world attempt!

About now Hydroptere is makeing an attempt at a cross ocean record from LA to Hawawai in under 4 days... Mile after mile after mile at 40 Kts.... Just hope they don't bump into any Vendee boats:eek:

I think its fantastic.
The forty knot barrier, the fifty knot barrier, the sixty knot barrier...is there a 70knot barrier to be broken in the near future?

Bring on the Ton!

How long will it take?

Anyone care to record their predictions so we can have a laugh in years to come at how far adrift we all were?

I'll kick it off... First 100mph under sail?

Impossible. Won't happen ;)

Been and gone, Mash. Highest speed by an ice yacht is claimed as 143mph back in 1938.

Actually that is unverified and considered unlikely. The highest confirmed speed record under sail is held by a land yacht, 126 mph set by a Brit, Richard Jenkins in Greenbird on March 26th 2009.

reading the Speed Rocket site

The technical issue is dealing with cavitation whe you reach 50kts... Seems the water starts to turn into gas and the foil looses grip whilst drag in increased at the same time...

They describe it as the water equivalent of the sound barrier where increasing power is needed for little extra speed until you break through the barrier... It is made complicated by the fact that the foil is both in and out the water...

The achievement is to shape the foil so it doesn't cavitate. Looking at Speedrocket the foils have some sort of shape just above the water surface.. That may be part of the secret?
