Hi

I recently bought my first boat and have her on the hard at Barry YC.

She will not be in the water until Spring '12 but I am looking for information / tips for sailing in the B C vicinity as this will be my first venture outside of the Solent area.

Ultimately the plan will to be ready from easter '12 onwards with a view to having the family on her for summer '12.

What is the general census of opinion for day trips / short hops from the area of Barry YC? ALos, what IYHO are the best pilot guides / charts for the area?

Many thanks
Paul

Hi PEEJAYSEA,
Welcome to the Bristol channel. Good choice!
I use Imray charts, wherever I go. It's a personal choice. I believe there is an Admiralty folio which would probably be better value. I think the BCYA blue book is a must, there is a new edition due next year.
There are loads of places to visit, from Lydney and Sharpness to Lundy and Milford haven. A number will depend on your boat, bilge keels give you a little more choice. Feel free to make your first trip to Cardiff, CYC have free visitor pontoons.
Good luck for next year.

I have the admiralty folio, and I'm happy with that. I'd be tempted to stick to day trips until you get your head around the tides. Personally, I think the tides are more of a help than a hinderance, but then I always try and work with them.

A trip up to Cardiff, stay at Mermaid quay or CYC visitors pontoon and then back is a short one, you'll start to get to know the area. Swansea, or Watchet, too.

Oh, and if you go out and don't see millions of sails, don't panic, it's not world war three, that's just what it's like here!

Welcome to the forum.

Just my opinion but for first trip do Cardiff then Bristol and Padstow are my other choices. Make sure you do Scilly Isles at some point.Loads of other places most people don't know about but pm me for them.

Thanks for the input and welcome to the area. I will probably go for the Admiralty charts as that has been my experience to date. I am looking forward to sailing in a new area and it sounds like there will be plenty to do / see. Really looking forward to the 2012 season!

Thanks again

Hi Paul

A book that I have is 'Bristol Channel and Severn Cruising Guide'. It is an Imray book.

I've not tried it yet as i've only launched my boat last weekend ..... At Barry!

Might see you down the club on a Monday or at the wknd over the winter - you are more than welcome to borrow it to see if you would want to buy one.

My boat is Tomahawk, the little Fox Terrier 22, light blue hull.

Hope to see you around.

Not much to worry about sailing off Barry. Another good book for local knowledge for the Channel is the BCYA Blue Book.

Try Monday night at BYC as Martin suggests - bar is open about 9 ish

Another vote for the BCYA "Blue Book" I think you can get it in Marine Scene chandlers Penarth.

One small tip about Barry Sailing is it can be quite rough in the area just outside the harbour so better to put fenders away hoist sails etc in the sheltered water in the outer harbour .

Barry isnt a busy shipping port these days but you do need to keep an eye out for ships coming in or leaving. Its easy to get engrossed in hoisting sails etc and not notice the lock gates are opening.....

Thanks

One and All

Many thanks for the tips, info and guidance.

As previously stated, Windthief is currently on the hard at BYC - simple reason for this is job related - I work for NATO and am currently in Afghanistan! Not much sailing going on here I can assure you:D

I hope to get back to UK towards the end of the month to put her to bed for the winter and maybe tackle a couple of jobs, get to know the area and see what Cardiff has to offer in the way of nautical supplies!

Simple plan is to have her safe / ready for Apr 2012 and have some fun over the summer months with the family. Looking forward to exploring the BC area as something new.

Best regards to all and thanks for the replies.
