Hi All,

Its that time of year and the wife wants to buy me something and im thinking of a sailing jacket.

Most of my sailing is done in Southampton water or the solent so dont need an offshore type. Was hoping to get a bit of advise on which jacket would be best. Must be waterproof, beathable and windproof with good hood. Want to spend around £100.

many thanks in advance.

My nephew and I both have Gill Coastal jackets which are well under £100. As long as you wear layers underneath, they're excellent. I used mine on a North sea crossing last year and stayed dry enough.

We've got a couple of pairs of Gill jackets and salopettes about the place... very happy with 'em. :p

How can you pick which one is best on a forum,

I went with SWMBO last year and we each bought the same jacket. SWMBO has spent many happy hours wearing hers while mine has had the hood removed because it drove me up the wall pressed against the back of my neck, It now resides mostly in the bottom of the wardrobe. While the sailing jacket I have had for the last 10 years is still worn on a regular basis.

Its stupid things really. My old jacket has side pockets for your hands but they are slanted down slightly with a lip at the back to stop keys falling out. The new one has straight pockets and everything falls out. The hood on the old one fits on your shoulders and there is room for a life jacket under the collar. The new one has had the hood removed so the life jacket can fit under the collar. So take your life jacket with you. Try it on and if it feels right buy it.

All jackets are different but you do get what you pay for.

Gill are also doing a Christmas promotion with certain retailers at the moment, free Cylinder-type drybag, various sizes depending on how much you spend....an extra "stocking filler" :D

Go to the Boat Show at Excel and try on all the various makes for fit etc on their stands then go to the chandleries and negotiate a good deal. That is what we did and both ended up with Gill.
