What is the best area to sail one week, one way, on the coast of Norway? Which place to start? Which place to end?

Also who do you suggest to contact regarding chartering a bareboat yacht 38ft-45ft, monohull or catamaran with 6-8 berths.

I live in Stavanger and work as a boat mechanic, I can strongly recommend starting at Stavanger and sailing up to Bergen, both served by a ferry from Newcastle. You will not have enough time to see all the delightful islands and fjords, as there is hundreds to visit. However you will not be disappionted that I can promise you, I wrote an article in the Aug\sept MBY. if you mail me I can send you pictures and answer any further questions you may have, I am not sure about boat charter but I can look into it, regards Steve

A couple of years ago we enjoyed a fantastic holiday sailing a circular route from Bodo to the northeast end of the Lofoten Islands, down the Island chain and back to Bodo. This is inside the arctic circle and we went in June enjoying 24hr daylight. We chartered a Bavaria 42 for 6 of us but could have comfortably slept 8 from Arctic circle yachting http://www.arcticyacht.com/index2.htm. They seemed to be the only charter company for 1000 miles!!! The lofotens were fantastic and the pilotage particularly interesting. If you like rock climbing look at http://www.svane.net/lofoten/. We did this climb and it was fantastic. Be sure to take in Trollsfjorden, (Frozen lake at top of hydro electric pipeline... bit of a scramble up but well worth it) lots of mussles on the jetty. 2 years ago it cost us £600/person for flights and charter, and we went 9 days, Saturday to Sunday. If you want any more info, or pictures let me know.

Hi Ami,
Some answers:
1. What is the warmst week to sail during the summer ?
They don't do long range weather forecasts for that far ahead, last year the weather was excellent from late July until late September i Eastern Norway but that can vary and the West coast of Norway is reknowned for it's rainfall, even in summer.
2. Do you know some brokers to contact arranging the yacht ?
"http://www.batlinken.com/", click on "Kjop-.....-Utleie" then click on "Batutleie", this produces a list of companies. alternativeley "http://www.njaa-yachts.com/" or "http://www.startsiden.no/kategorier/okonomi_og_naringsliv/bransjer/motor_og_transport/bat/utleie/index.html" or "http://www.finn.no/finn/boat/selection4?pdc=1042731101609&category=7096" and click on "Bater til leie"
3. I need yacht between 40-48 feet' it can be Benetau "ocianis" 411, 423,461,473
or - catamaran "Lagoon 38" or 410.
See above
4.Which airport arriving ?
Depends where you're sailing but I would choose the area between Tønsberg & West of Kristiansand or over to Sweden and down to Lysekil. Ryanair fly to an airport close to Tønsberg.
5.What is special in the coast area between Stavanger to Bergen -marinas,anchorages bays ?
Lot's of RAIN :-(
6. Any more tips to proceed my plan ?
Bring as much booze, food, everything with you as the prices here are high.
Thanks again

Ami

Hi,
Firstly, the timing. Norwegians "all" go on their summer holidays at the same time. If I am right, this year it will be weeks 28, 29 and 30. (Between July 5th and 27th). Good idea to avoid those dates! The holiday is early because the long hours of daylight have traditionally meant that the best weather came around midsummer; but in recent years the best weather has come just as people have come back from their holidays....perhaps a result of climate changes?
Where?depends on what you want. Lofoten for drama and a more intense experience; theWest coast around Bergen if you want more options in the case of bad weather, especially if you have kids/inexperienced people with you, as you can sail within the skerries 95% of the time if need be, or outside if you wish.It does rain here, but hey, if you want sun you can follow the sheep to the Med!
With only one week to play with you will either be v.lucky and hit a high pressure, or less lucky and get frontal weather direct from bonny Scotland. Drop me a line and I'll tell you when my mum's coming over; it never rains when she's here.
South/East coast is crowded.
I would suggest Bergen to Stavanger or Bergen to Sognefjord, or the opposite. Bergen has direct flights to London, and fast catamaran conections to Stavanger and Sognefjord.
As for boats, try web site www.nautic-sailing.no (you can click on an English flag). I know nothing about the company other than that it is local, small and has newish boats in about the size range you were looking for. Have fun.
