This is from (ahem) another sailing forum ... if you've ever worried about your boat in the winter, consider what these boats are putting up with in Lake Geneva

bit tricky cleaning those decks during the winter lay-up? I suppose the poor guys/gals will have to put up with going skiing instead. My heart bleeds for them;)

The growth of Stalagmites comes to mind.
One supposes this is the cumulative effect of an uninterrupted period of continuous drizzle or fine rain in sub zero temperatures. It is not rime. Rime only develops to windward.
Funnily enough, I have had ice on deck in higher latitudes (coast of Norway and in the Baltic Sea in the Gulf of Bothnia) but in both cases exposure to sunshine melted the ice in places exposed to the sun's rays.

Looks more like a very strong wind ripping the surface off the lake (fresh water of course) and blowing it ashore where it immediately freezes.

Is that one of the UK's new Aircraft Carriers? With a Stealth Fighter/bomber parked on the deck?

Probably more effective than what we have now. Its a tarp to keep the sea spray off pipe bundles which are underneath. The pipes are bundled in joints of 3 to be lifted up to the rig and the sea spray would freeze onto the bundles on the journey up. Large lumps of ice would then fall off as the bundle was lifted, it would also take forever to break off the ice once on deck as it was as hard as concrete.

Yes ; the wind is called the "Bise Noire" and it's absolutely freezing. There were photos like this about three years ago too.

Coz its photoshop, not real.
My, what a suspicious one you are. Here is another from the same place showing how it happens - the strong east wind drives spray over the harbour wall that then freezes on everything, here it is the outer pier:

And this one:

I was in Martigny yesterday, a little bit up the Rhone valley from the Lake of Geneva; it was a sunny afternoon with a rise in temperature (although only up to -7°C) but the strong easterly made it very uncomfortable to be walking against it.
