Whilst a Moboer at heart Swmbo and i have been sailing with friends a couple of times and also crewed on a suppliers boat (Jeanneau 55) in the round the IOW race a couple of years ago. We have enjoyed these experiences very much and have agreed to a sailing holiday in Greece with friends. We will be sailing as part of a flotilla of approx 8 boats as i understand and each couple will have a boat of approx 30ft.
Question is whilst we are capable of doing what were told as crew where do we go to learn the basics to enable us to not look like complete idiots. Any good web sites etc.

Beg, borrow or hire a small sailing-dinghy for a couple of afternoons and mess around in it out of sight of your friends. You'll learn more than from any book and will probably know more than the other 7 skippers by then.

Quickest way to learn is to get into a sailing dinghy for a couple of hours. Errors are much more obvious! (and sometimes damp) This should provide the basics of sailing, which together with your mobo knowledge will probably surprise your chums!

Davido has given you the best advice possible and I expect he would agree with my provisos.
1. Make sure it is a sailing dinghy and that you sail it.
2. Take all necessary precautions, lifejackets etc.
3. Including maybe some tuition if you feel you need it.
I am sure that messing about with a sailing dinghy is the best way to learn how to sail. Have fun.

Might be worth your while (and not too expensive) to look at doing an RYA dinghy sailing course. Level 1 and level 2 each only take a weekend and cover all the basics - we tried the 'just get in a dinghy and figure it out' approach and it can be hideously frustrating if you don't have someone there giving instructions / pointing out the obvious mistakes.

Yes, you can buy/borrow books on the subject, but unless you want a very soggy book at the end of the day, you can't really take them out with you in a dinghy!

I went to Rockley Point Sailing School in Poole many years ago and did a beginers dinghy sailing course over a week.
Not very expensive but exceptionally hard work - and damp at times!
There is no faster and surer and safer way to learn to sail - period!
Phone your local RYA listed school and book a life changing weeks 'holiday'
You will NEVER forget it!
