Hi all,

I'd like to announce a new blog system for people interested in crusing, racing and all things sailing-related. It's called SailBlogs and is at http://www.sailblogs.com.

If you've considered starting a blog, or looking for a blog host that is more in tune with sailing, than I'd like to invite you over for a look. The blogs are free and getting started is very easy.

A blog is also a great way for a club to keep in touch with members about current events.

And if you're just interesting in reading, there are currently over 40 members keeping logs of their adventures.

SailBlogs is an outgrowth of my X-Journal system that is used by expeditions. When I became interested in sailing, I realized that sailors and cruisers share many of the same issues as expeditions - slow or no internet connections, remote locations, sometimes harsh conditions - as well as an interest to share thier adventures.

I took some of the best features of XJournal and made SailBlogs. In addition, if you find you need a more robust blogging system you can directly upgrade into XJournal which provides access to many additional features, such as automated map-tracking of your postion, with the map linked to the journal.

Since it's a new site, I'd also appreciate any feedback about it.

Thanks a lot, and I hope you enjoy SailBlogs!

You could, and that's fine. SailBlogs provides a path to some nice advanced features like map tracking of your boat, being able to post via email (including SailMail), the ability to either remove the ads or make them your own, and a bunch of other stuff. This is what Steamy Windows is doing - they're not to big into design, but their journal is cool.

Still haven't completely forgiven you for saying Last week I found a site called yotblog, and thought (other than the name is dumb) that i could do better than that. (The New Project, 30 March)

but . . . you did really well getting sponsored by Cruiser Log; it's an excellent site.

Interested in what you said about people installing their own ads. If you are talking about Google Adsense then having more than one account's ads on a server may be an infringement of their TOS, resulting in the loss of the account, so I would check it out before you let people do that.

Dave, thanks for the mention . . .

A strange thing happened today, someone signed up and has started a blog about films - second post was a review of Bladerunner. Should I let her stay?

Forgive, not forgive - it's up to you. I'll stand by it, I like yacht over yot. Choosing a name is part of the process, yachtblog was taken, as was sailblog singular. Perhaps we will end up with a bit MORE friendly competition. I do think I could do better or I'd not done it. I'm familiar with BlogHost, I have a friend that is playing with it. As a download/install it's not all that bad. I wrote XJournal from the ground up. To each their own.

But I'm not going to get into a pissing contest about who's system is better than who's. Users can judge that for themselves.

XJournal (which is what sailblogs is sibling to) as a system has been around for a long time - since 1999. I actually starting dabbling with the cruising community about two years ago, when I started sailing myself. I made some modifications that allow me to make the process of offering free blogs viable, as well integrate easier with my mapping system and other features that expeditions already pay me for. So the progression for me is natural.

I'm familiar with google's TOS, but thanks. Free users don't get to run ads on their own. If they upgrade, they can run theirs or none.

As for the non-sailing user on your system, do what you will with thier account.

Cheers,

Tim

Wondered how long it would take you to notice that and what you'd do about it? Her first film crit is OK by me (perhaps a trifle over-blown but hey - she's a student) so perhaps a friendly email to ask if she bothered to read the other content on the site and enquire whether she thinks she'll get a suitably appreciative audience?
