Sailing at Leigh on Sea Essex

Hi,
I have just purchased a 1966 Seaking 24 and she will moored on the pontoons at Leigh Marina. I was wondering whether anyone had any advice about sailing in the area, leaving/returning to the pontoons.etc.

Welcome Chris. If you scroll down the main index page of YBW, you will find an East Coast Meeting sub Forum. Lots of peeps in there that are local to you.

There is not much water at Leigh Marina, it comes and goes pretty quick. Follow the buoyed/withy channel pretty closely when its getting low, or you will hit the mud. I have spent a pleasant tide waiting for the water to come back in and lift me off...

The Crooked Billet has some good beer.....
 
That's great. I gathered from other info you have to be quick in and out or make a good day of it....I'll take a look at the thread you suggested.

Ooh, excellent. I always wondered if my first boat was an early Seaking or an early Finesse but never could find any history. Advice is sound re the East Coast Forum. Although he is away at the moment Moodysabre (Rover) overlooks the creeks of Leigh from his home and I am sure will give you advice. Picture?
 
Welcome - do join us on the East Coast forum. If you haven't already, its worth investing in the East Coast Pilot (no connection just a happy customer) which you will find invaluable for planning your sailing from Leigh.

There is very little water at Leigh Marina. Even in a Seaking I don't suppose you have more than a hour either side of HW. It's virtues are the proximity to the station and cockles and beer. I have not heard any good comments about the marina and the operators have a business dealing in diggers. Swish it aint.

Nice mud there though for a wooden boat

I would sign up for a year until you are sure it's for you.

First boat and had to find somewhere in Leigh where it would be easy to get my young sons on board and be able to do some bits on her before she went in the water...
Went for a walk down there today and spoke to some owners on the pontoons , no horror stories so will see how it goes..thanks for the heads up though.. Will watch what happens...
