I am off to Antigua for a Sunsail holiday at the weekend. Part of a cunning plan to introduce dearheart into sailing. For the past three seasons there has been absolutely no interest and its been (mainly) boys days out. Am I doing the right thing?

I could go on for hours about this...

Excellent way to win her over, but as soon as she shows an interest, persuade her to do comp crew and day skipper with some girlfriends.

I have never seen anybody I know do this, despite my nagging, and without fail the partner sails less and less. Most of us are not great teachers, better not to try.

I know one Sunsail base very well, and just seethe with exasperation when I'm there.. Almost all of the wives on the villa/flotilla fortnight spend the first week by the pool while he is out on dinghies, keelboats etc. The she goes out on flotilla knowing nothing. What hope is there?

It's even worse when the 'skipper' is also relatively inexperienced. How does anybody expect their partner (who does, after all, know them quite well) to freely trust their life to someone whose voice goes up one octave when he steps onto a boat? She knows that he doesn't know.

Rant over. For now.

Agree completely , SWMBO & eldest daughter (then 12) did a comp crew together and it enhanced enormously their confidence & ability .. cos they never listen to me about anything!

one way to convince them of the joys of sailing is to take them somewhere you can only go by yacht. try the anchorage on the south side of maiden island or in the lee of great bird island- fabulous snorkelling. a little further off, if you go up to barbuda and anchor off palmetto point you are likely to have the place to yourselves, 11 miles of virgin sand.

we strongly recommend montserrat but the return trip is likely to be a bit uncomfortable.
