Sailin - Beware, it's a very expensive pasttime/hobby/addiction

Well, yes, sadly no longer akin to standing under a shower tearing up £5 notes. £50 notes in pairs now.

Bought 2 nice shiny cam cleats a while back - superior to the others so ended up buying 8 more - at £35 each too. (don't tell the wife ....)

Not at all,I disagree..I have resisted buying an autohelm and other stuff. But I have not been within 5oo miles of a yacht chandlers the test will be when I launch the boat and am adjacent to a marina chandlers.....

We met a couple sailing in Turkey. They had a very nice Beneteau 50, which they keep in Kos. They've saved money by moving it there from The Solent. Having said that it's still not exactly cheap.

She did say though that they've found you can pick up loads of things cheaply, for the boat, from caravan and camping outlets.

There's always a way though, I made half the cost of my current boat on first one and live on it so no rent to pay (not a property owner)...

We started in a very modest way. I thought I was a tight a%sed git that would never be drawn into spending so much money. It appears that isn't the case!

Ah, but..

A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour time, MONEY, love, affection, blood, sweat, tears and Sikaflex.

On the really good days it all seems worth it, but when it's pissing down with rain, f6 on the nose, green over the front , n yer oiles are leaking, plus the tides turned early, you'll miss last orders, and the jibs developing a rip....

You still wouldn't take up something dangerous n boring like Golf:D

Actually, compared to having normal holiday, I think it's cheap.

Two weeks in the caribean for a family of four will set you back at least £4000

Swmbo just spent 4 days at center park with her sister and nephew, £900

Camping pitch in Devon as revealed by a forumit here, one night £40...

We spend probably £4500 per annum on moorings and maintenance, a person who lives near the cost and is DIY competent could cut this considerably, an a decent family cruiser can be had for less than the cost of a vw camper....
And hold it's value better, and with savings rates low the cost of opportunity has never been better.

This year we will get at least 60 nights on board, for our £4500. That's a quarter the cost/night of the caribean vacation, and 1/3 the cost of centre parcs....

So, it costs money, but I think in the current economy, with the cost of a meal out for 2 at our local pub costing £60, it's remarkable value for money.

What we often deliberately ignore is the loss of interest (rubbish at the moment admitedly) on the capital cost.

Mind you, I cycle a lot, and a decent set of cycling waterproofs will set you back over 300 quid, and they don't have any pockets or a hood! Some cycling friends of mine have fleets of bikes and 10 to 20k tied up in their bikes. They can only ever ride one at a time, and often have an expensive bike which will only appear on the road maybe once a year (if its lucky).

I think as long as you accept it is a waste of money and every penny is just a luxury you could well do without then everything is fine. :)
