Having read many bad reports on Volvo engine and gearboxes mostly concerning failures and high price of spares why are they so propular with boatbuilders. Someone told me it's because they have deferred payment terms and effectively the boatbuilders only pay for the Volvo unit when the boat is actually sold is this the real reason for Volvos wide use?
If you recently bought a boat that gives you an alternative choice of engine, like a Jeanneau, which I believe offers a Yanmar what did you choose and why?

i recently built a cat to which i fitted yanmar 3gm30s with saildrives.

the reason for choosing saildrives rather than shafts was the plug-and-go installation and the removal of stern gland worries.

the choice of yanmar was on grounds of cost, weight and reputation (i had heard bad reports of volvo. i ruled out other manufacturers as i would have had to spend more time matching engines with 3rd party saildrives and sorting out the mountings
