After changing the propshaft seals on our saildrive we have started to notice a whining noise when full ahead. At half speed ahead there is no noise. We're not sure where the noise is coming from but we suspect the thrust bearing on the saildrive. the oil in the saildrive is crystal clear with no sign of water in it. Has anyone else experienced this and if so should we be lifting the boat out again straight away or do they carry on with a bit of a whine for a while. It is being run in the same oil as the engine at the moment. would changing to a thicker oil stop it? Is it the sort of job that could be done between tides?

Hey there, you should be using a 90 weight oil in the drive, I am still running the recommended synthetic 90 gear lube in my 110 saildrive or is it a 120? with 2030 engine and 800plus hours. I have had a whine or singing occur in the past but this was cured by tuning the prop, specifically eliminating the rounded.tapered back are of the prop blade by filing 90 degrees more or less. Yes, this could well be acomplished on a haul between tides. Hope this helps! good luck!
