I changed the oil in my Volvo D1-30B saildrive a few weeks back but because of an airlock could only put back 1.3 litres compared to the 1.6 litres extracted. I haven't been able to get back to the boat since. It may have now cleared but if not, do you think running the engine and very briefly engaging gear will do the trick? I don't want to cause any damage.

I assume that running the engine on it own - out of gear - will not cause any problems?

The input side of the sail drive will still be running and therefor will still require lubrication but if you left it with the filler cap open then it should have drained down enough to top up.
Did you actually extract the full capacity as it often the case some is left?

I left the filler cap on so perhaps it will still be airlocked?

I didn't realise that there is an oil drain pipe on the saildrive unit itself for connecting an extractor to. Simply inserting the extractor pipe into the oil filler hole, I managed to remove 1.6 litres but as this plus the 0.5 litres that you can't get by extraction is less than the total capacity, I was planning to do the job again.
