\"Saildrive\" Prop For Honda 5hp

Hi, I'm canvassing opinion...

I've got an Achilles 24 with a Honda 5hp four stroke. It has no problems pushing it in flat water, but when you try to punch into a strong wind and the resulting wind over tide chop, it cavitates, and you get nowhere fast (as I discovered in the Tamar on Tuesday).

I know you can get a finer pitch prop for the engine, and I'm guessing that that is what it needs. What I'd like to know is if anyone has experience of these things (particularly if you've had the same engine/problem).

Basically, did it work or did you just rev faster and go nowhere just as fast?

Thanks in anticipation..
Robin.

I'm far from an authority but my understand is that a saildrive type prop does help quite a lot as they are designed to push a (relativle) heavy boat as apposed to a dingy/launch that will plane easily, the characteristics of these two are obviously quite different.

I have a similar problem and feel that the engine is unable to rev high enough but am un willing to spend money on an older engine that may get replaced in a short while.

Saildrive props also give you much more power in reverse

Is your Honda long or short shaft? It sounds to me as if possibly the shaft is too short so the prop comes close to the surface and looses its grip on the water as the boat pitches over the chop.

If this is the case a different prop wont help.

If possible try borrowing a longshaft motor and give it a go on a rough day.

Try another post headed"Achilles 24 motor problem. This will hopefully be seen by other Achilles owners who will have first hand experience. You may be reinventing the wheel here.

My Anderson 22 has a shortshaft Yamaha5 which performs well with the standard prop even in a chop.Im not sure but I think the Achilles outboard well is higher out of the water than the Anderson.

Best of luck and good sailing.
