Number one Son just called, "hey Dad I was motoring out of the marina and the port engine made a sort of wering sound then no drive, any idea what has broken?"

The sail drive is a Volvo S 120 B, and I have not a clue what it could be, perhaps the spline?

Can anyone provide some guidance.

Obvious maybe but has the prop fallen off or the gearbox actuating cable broken?
First thing to do is look that the lever is going into forward OK. If not cable? Very rare to have the gearbox internals fail but not impossible.

there was a problem some time back with volvo saildrives coming loose from the engine and chewing up the drive spline. We got sent a note from bavaria saying to check the bolts. Sure enough - 2 had fallen off, one was loose and only one tight. Put them back on with lots of threadlocker.

I am not an expert but I have done some work on my own 120S in the past. Here are my suggestions:

The propeller has fallen off.

If it is a folding propeller, the blades have fallen off – although I would expect one to fall off first accompanied by lots of vibration.

The rubber bush in the propeller hub has let go (probably accompanied by loss of the propeller).

The splines on the propeller or shaft have worn.

The internal gearing has worn possibly on the lower shaft although I think you would hear much more noise if this happened!

The splines on the engine/gearbox interface have worn and/or the gearbox bolts have loosened.

The gearbox shift mechanism or cable are faulty. Check that the shift mechanism (kind of triangular shape) at the gearbox end is secure (it is held on by a single bolt) and that the cable hasn’t adjusted itself. My shift mechanism worked loose and I had trouble engaging gear.

Good luck and let us know what you find. It might happen to me next.
