I have delayed replying to your post in the hope that someone with your engine would have the answer.

I have a Volvo 2001 with saildrive and this developed the same problem as yours. I had to wiggle the lever in neutral in order to actually get neutral. On my gearbox, there is adjustment of the cable at the gearbox end. The cable is mounted on a plate and has a small nut that you can screw along a thread to adjust the effective length of the cable. I was going to adjust this but then discovered that the single nut securing the plate in place had worked loose and the plate was flopping around. I tightened the nut and the problem seems to have gone away.

It was probably my own fault as I removed the cable and the plate when I replaced my saildrive seal. I obviously didn’t secure it properly afterwards.

In your case, it may be that the cable has stretched slightly or the adjusting nut has ‘self-adjusted’ over the years. It would also be worth checking that the plate is secure and that the cable has a free run from the cockpit to the gearbox and is not been dragged to one side but something else. It is a fairly easy DIY job to carry out these checks and adjustment if your access is good – mine is terrible! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This is all assuming your set-up is similar to mine.
