Hello All,
The gearbox in my saildrive (Bukh DV20 engine) is worn and needs overhaul. In fact it is the only the forward gears that have gone - the reverse works fine. Before I head off and give the local Bukh man the equivalent of a couple of seriously big mortgage repayments, I would like to hear from anyone who may be able to propose an alternative.
Has anyone faced a similar problem and repaired the gearbox in a much cheaper fashion? Perhaps in a motor repairer? Or is it such a specialist thing that only the manufacturer can do it?
And are there any tips/traps with dropping the saildrive leg?
Has the damage been caused by a 'freewheeling' prop? Or is it just 'one of those things' that happen to gearboxs after many years of use. (I am unsure of the history of the engine/gearbox as I have only owned the boat for 2 years).
I would be very grateful for any advice on this subject.
Cheerio and thanks,
Paul
