Looking at a boat fitted with a Volvo Md 17D 36hp and a saildrive with a gaiter. Could anyone suggest a 'ballpark' cost for the replacement of the gaiter?

This is the main seal? Then just over £300 for the kit and 10 hours for 2 people. Plus for an MD 17 several tins of spinach to be able to lift the monster of an engine. Worth changing oil and lower seals at the same time.

+1, when we first bought Carina we had the seal changed at about £1500. Having seen it done I will do it myself next time, although it very much depends on access on your boat. Carina has a hatch in the cockpit floor, so getting to the back of the engine and top of the leg is good.

Hi
Have a volvo md25l in Bavaria Ocean. Had to replace gaitor on purchase. After seeing cost £1500-£1700 I decided to do it myself. Also better to change seals in the leg aa well. If I can do it I reckon most people can with a little research

My gaiter was changed a year or two ago a couple of years later than scheduled but was still in pristine condition. Of course the gaiter should be changed if necessary, but if it and its flange looks OK I wouldn't worry about the odd year or so.

To me the "gaiter" is the fairing rubber from leg to hull. If that's what you are referring to buy the Yanmar one it will fit and is cheaper.

I'm pleased to say my friend has had his offer accepted. I've passed on the kind and helpful comments above which will, I'm sure, save him some uncertainty and beer-tokens. Thanks, all. :D
