Hi,
This is my first post here - though I have been lurking for a while ....

I embarked today on repalcing the seal on a Volvo sail drive on a new (to me) boat - insurance company insisted /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Searching the forum here gave us the confidence to give it a go - lots of good advice and we got the PBO article.

Anyway - we got the drive out today with a fair bit of grunting etc - but generally OK - old seal is 1992 and looks almost as clean as the new one /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif - but I guess thats insurance companies for you (we've also got to do the gas - cos there's no date stampon the pipe, and 50 cm of diesel pipe because it doesn't day fire resistant etc etc.)

Anyway - I had a couple of questions for some more mechanically minded with these saildrive things than me

VolvoMDIIc.jpg

The above picture shows (I hope!) the rubber "thingy" that transmits the power from the engine to the saildrive.

1) Is it sensible to replace this as I've got everything apart - its shows slifght signs of wear - but nothing that major. Would keypart have this ? (Is this what I've seen referred to as the "hex adapter" kit for these engines ?)

2) There is a gasket between the face shown in the picture and the saildrive - this isn't included in the saildrive kit - and nothing I have seen refers to this - but ours certainly came in pieces as the saildrive separated from the engine - so I need a new one (keyparts ?) - I'm just puzzled why none of the destructions mention this - do moast people normally manage to re-use theirs ??

Many thanks
James

The rubber 'thingy' should be fine, its not highly stressed and the 'splines' are few and large so it won't slip. As regards the gasket they usually break so you will need a new one, however I would use some silicone or gasket glue to prevent any chance of oil leakage.

"spannerman" - many thanks for that - looking at your details certainly sounds like you should know the answer - incidentally I've got a brother in law working in Stavanger (oil) - keep meaning to get across for a visit.

Just realised that the saildrive we have is a 110 not a 120 that all the articles refer to. It has 6 studs (none wired) rather than 10 - and has an O ring when split - and as far as I can see - no gasket unless its very deteriorated - are the two halves just held together with sealant ? Is this anything special - anything to watch out for putting the 2 halves back together around a new seal ?

Sorry for all the questions - but any help much appreciated

Thanks
James

If it has an 'o' ring then I would still use some silicone as a back up to prevent any oil leaking, its straight forward although it can be tricky getting the hex adapter lined up, rotate the engine on the front pulley.
You really should get over to Stavanger sometime, its one of Europes best cruising areas IMHO.
Good luck Steve
