Hello Everyone...
I need some help in identifying this British built sailboat that I just purchased....Built in 1973 by an outfit called Ardleigh Plastics. If anyone has any information about the boat that would be great. Thanks for the help...

Looks like a Macwester - probably the 28. Originally they were built by Macwester at Littlehampton. Massive volume for low cost and so a lot were produced to a basic standard. You need a big engine to go to windward !

Definitely a macwester, either 26 or 28. Good accomodation, poor to windward on the 26, better on the 28 (but neither brilliant!), but popular and a good seaboat that will look after you when things get rough.

Have fun!

Hasn't it got a bow sprit, seem to remember a write-up in PBO ? improved the boat a lot. They were offered as an option when built, but very few ordered.

The report I read on them, said it was offered as an option, and from memory 30 ish were built so fitted. New owners in the 70's saw it as old fashioned, and not modern looking.

Thanks for the input....I haven't dove on the boat yet to check out the underbody...but I was wondering if they had both a long keel or a bilge keel version for the 28. Are we talking poor windward performance like a Westsail 32 or what? Thanks again for the help...

All bilge keels. The earliest had a dreadfull pair - shallow and fat, later ones deeper and narrower, which helped a bit. OK on a closeish reach, but just go sideways if you harden up to a beat. However - very reassuring boats off the wind, even in bad conditions.
