Well, I think...the talk was of tax being calculated on sail area. Not to include spinnakers and storm jibs. So..that's a diesel tax and a sail tax for us. I don't now how this can be enforced.
Crazy....
Crazy indeed /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
I'm in the process of having 8 inches taken off the foot of my main, and 2 feet off the leach of my genoa.
I've heard that the bill is being amended - something about the addition of a reefing clause and the increase in mean wind speeds due to global warming. At least two major sailmakers are now gearing up to produce smaller sails as a result of this lunacy.
I believe if you have a clear panel put in, this area is exempt from tax as it is a safety feature. I can see someone coming up with a totally transparent sail.

That won't work, as they will just reintroduce the window tax.
If you apply the rule of section four paragraph 2 (e) subsection (iv) part 2 one only has to remove 452mm from the leech as long as you have substituted a transparent optically flat panel of minimum 92.5% area of the sail two thirds of the way up the luff. The advantage of this rule is that one can cross apply the net carbon reduction to your personal car - NB this does not apply to company cars - they have to use Section three para 1. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I'm surprised that nobody seems to have picked up on the reporting procedures that we will be required to implement. Every time a sail is raised, a reef is put in or shaken out, we will have to report it the the Coastguard who will log it. The Taxman will then assess how much we owe.
There won't be space left on the air waves for us to carry out radio checks. I don't know how we will cope.
Ah, tis but a cover story cooked up by the Chancellor's office; yet another of their stealth taxes has been spotted and they are in damage limitation mode!
Spoilsport!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was enjoying this immensely ....mind you have heard that what started as a joke is now being considered seriously by the taxers.
