CRUISING TRIP OF A DAYTIME

Passengers who booked an expensive round-the-world cruise got less than they bargained for - when they went on a day trip to the Isle of Wight.

P&O ship Aurora should have set sail from Southampton on Sunday on a 103-day round-the-world trip to 40 destinations including Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, the Falklands and San Francisco.

However, a technical fault meant that the £106m cruise liner was unable to set off, and passengers were offered a day trip round the Solent instead.

The ship, carrying 1,769 passengers, is now undergoing repairs and P&O hope to be able to send it off on a shortened trip within days, though the company needs to wait for the results of tests.

A spokeswoman said: "The passengers have been kept informed, and are aware that sea tests are going on."

All customers were offered the chance to disembark, but only seven chose to do so, the spokeswoman added.

The rest of the passengers were enjoying free drinks at the liner's bars and restaurants while the work was being done.

The price of the round-the-world cruise ranges from £9,800 for a cabin to £41,985 for a penthouse suite.

The cost of a trip to the Isle of Wight is normally £9.40.

The Aurora has had a difficult existence since Princess Anne failed to smash a bottle of champagne on it during its 2000 naming ceremony.

It broke down on its maiden voyage while in 2003 1,000 people on board fell ill with a virus.

Acshully I reckon that if they stayed berthed andmade the appropriate noises then 99.9% of passengers would'nt know that they had'nt been to Egypt an`d back!

So what we need to do is set up Scuttlebutt Cruises Ltd asap.

Ply all the punters with food and drink, sail them round the IOW and charge extortionate amounts of money. Brilliant !

Mind you I'm sure this concept is not new as several companies will charge lots of dosh to give you this experience during the Round the Island Race and alcohol won't be included.

Once a jinxed ship, always a jinxed ship.....

...like my wife's current car. In the 15 months of it's life it has been hit three times by other drivers including a London Transport bus who removed the driver's mirror.
Sadly (well not really) the local fox population was reduced by one on friday when one ran out in front of her from a spinney. Nothing visible from the front but £1275 worth of damage was done to the radiator & A/C system. The fox would not have known what hit it.

There is great superstition in seafaring men about "Unlucky" ships!

I have been for a cruise on Aurora. Believe me, most of the passengers will have been perfectly happy sheltering by the IOW, rather than face the weather we have recently had. Even down here /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Despite the stabilisers, the ship does roll quite nicely. Makes you feel drunk when walking along the corridors. At least how I imagine being drunk must feel /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, actually, the landowner is a friend of mine and he had just asked me to get in touch with my cousin, a former police marksman to come and sort out three foxes which were massacreing his tenants' chickens. That's one shell he'll be saving.
