Hi everyone,

Could any of you fellow yachties advise me please? I've got a torn genoa and need to get it repaired. I was toying with going to the sail place next door to Force 4 in Bristol, but if there's anywhere good nearer the Cardiff area that you recommend, I'll give it a go.

The sail is torn on the luff and as it fits in a furling, the luff cord (which is a plastic extrusion) has gone too. I could do with a minor repair to the sacrificial strip as well. This is gonna cost isn't it?

Take care all,

Lizzy D.

Bristol Sails is who you are referring to, and if you want it done soon then get in there quick: Marcus can take a while to do a job.

It will be cheaper if you can unstitch/remove the remains of the luff cord yourself, because they will charge for the time it takes.

I tore my old genoa at the luff when the foil parted at a join but repaired it myself (at anchor at Lundy) and it lasted another 2 seasons. I wrapped a patch of sailcloth, glued with evostick, around the torn section (about 6" long), with a short piece of rope in it to bridge the gap. As long as it runs in the groove it should last, because the stress is well distributed along the luff.

(Evostick is my secret weapon when it comes to sail repairs - you should see my new slab reefing patches! - they have worked a treat so far, although they are heavily stitched as well. I used a cordless drill with a 1mm bit to drill through the layers and then hand stitched. Took time but saved a lot of money)

Thanks everyone for the advice. Didn't know about Severn Sails so if I haven't got time to repair it myself, I'll give it a go.

Thanks again everyone for the advice.
